Just A Room

The door reluctantly opens to reveal a rickety staircase descending into darkness.” - zork
“Just A Room” is an installation and collaborative performance project built inside the Logan Center Gallery, The University of Chicago. A wall was constructed, sectioning off a square space within the gallery. A door was framed and hung within that wall. In the square space, a living room was installed. The living room was filled with instruments, a record player, a coffee machine, a television, and design/art objects by the artist (Pet) and various friends/family. Inside the living room, the artist would frequently reside ( aprox 5 hours per day ), inviting entrants to engage in collaborative hypnosis art making. These sessions were always a creative collaboration between the artist and the room entrant(s). These session’s subject and form were ever changing, collaborator(s) directed, and largely improvised. Sessions would commonly involve spoken word, touch and sound performance.
The door to the room would remain closed, but never locked. The room is interested letting viewers explore ‘where the art is’, ‘what is aloud’ and ‘just hanging out’.
Complementary sound/voice performances were scheduled throughout the run of “Just A Room”. These events included a live narrator and collaborative concerts solo & with other sound makers.
